Ishka caught up with Carine Truong, Director Aviation with NWS and presenter in Hong Kong ahead of the event, to get her views on where the market is headed

  Carine Truong
  Director Aviation
  NWS

Ishka: How do you measure success when it comes to being the parent of a leasing company? What metrics do you most pay attention to?

NWS: Firstly, we measure success by a number of KPIs which include the overall profitability of the company, the returns of transactions - for instance whether they meet our IRR and cash yield hurdles. Besides performance indicators, we assess the company on their overall business strategy and corporate directions or goals. These include whether they fulfill the parent company’s strategic initiatives on areas like risk mitigation and developing new business segment, as well as creating synergies within the Group of companies on the wider picture.

Ishka: There has been speculation that there could be a slow down in the number among the smaller Chinese leasing platforms bidding for aircraft. Is this perceived slow down real or mere wishful thinking?

NWS: Chinese leasing platforms several years of experience in the market. They are showing that they are becoming more rational in bidding for transactions, being pickier on the right assets at the right price. Therefore, we do not perceive this trend as a slowdown, rather the aircraft leasing business has proven to be resilient to historical downturns and remains an attractive investment class.

Ishka: How do you see that market evolving over the next 18 months?

NWS: We believe we are now moving into a stage where there are increasingly more remarketing activities as lessors’ supply of mid-age aircraft comes off lease. At the same time the order backlog of lessors are also coming into market. This may exert further pressure on lease rates. As such, we will also see more lessors focusing on remarketing efforts rather than building up sheer portfolio size. We believe the trading market will still be active for optimizing portfolio, and lessors will continue to explore trading opportunities and demonstrate some growth.

Ishka: We have noticed a contraction among returns for equity investors for leased assets. What total returns are you aiming for with a leasing platform and how do they compare to the returns that lessors targeting new aircraft can actually book now?

NWS: We look at returns around the low-double digits region. We believe that the SLB market for new aircraft is still very competitive with low returns. On the other hand, the returns of transactions involving direct order from OEMs can depend on many factors like pricing, escalation, PDP costs as well as the market supply of the respective slots. There are more to play around with in tailor-making solutions for airlines in a direct order. This is one of the reasons why we have placed a direct order with Airbus and Boeing last year, and together with the further development in aircraft trading and asset management business to enhance profitability.

Ishka: Is NWS looking at any other aircraft leasing investment opportunities? If so what sort of structures could appeal?

NWS: There is no specific transaction we are looking at. Any investment opportunity is considered case by case, and we remain open to all opportunities and structures.

Ishka: Is there appetite for the firm to acquire more widebodies or alternatively to expand its asset management capabilities?

NWS: While developing asset management business for 3rd party, we understand that widebodies are attractive to certain investors, however our focus remains on narrowbodies.
